Information Commissioner Peter Tyndall has today welcomed the passing of the Freedom of Information Bill.

The new legislation, which will be known as the Freedom of Information Act, 2014, extends FOI to all public bodies.

The Information Commissioner congratulated Minister Howlin on finalising the legislation and thanked his Department for consulting with his office during the drafting of the new legislation.

In particular the Information Commissioner welcomed the elimination of the €15 application fee for FOI requests and the extension of FOI law to all public bodies including:

  • An Garda Síochána
  • Public financial bodies, such as NTMA, NAMA, NPRF, and the NDFA
  • the Central Bank.

The Bill will now be forwarded to President Michael D. Higgins for his approval. The Department of Public Expenditure & Reform expects the legislation will be enacted by mid-October of this year.
